Ninety percent of dieters who lose weight, no
matter how it’s achieved, will gain the weight back in three
years or less. Ninety-five percent gain it back within five years.
I developed four core treatment prongs for my
program: nutrition, movement, medication, and motivation.
In my seminars, I illustrate this four-pronged approach by asking
those in the audience to imagine themselves sitting on their kitchen
table. In this position, high up off the floor, you find yourself
supported by four strong legs. And with these four legs in place,
you don’t worry much about crashing to the floor. The table
will remain upright. You can easily keep good balance on top of
it.
In this analogy, each of these four table legs
represents a tool for successful weight management. The thickest
and most supportive leg is motivation – because without the
motivation you can’t accomplish anything. It is the key to
success. In fact, if this leg is knocked out, the table will topple
over instantly, and you with it. The legs of medication, movement,
and nutrition are roughly the same size and strength, giving comparable
amounts of support.
Now, if you were really sitting on top of a table,
you would naturally want all four legs in place. This way no one
leg carries the burden of your weight and you have a solid horizontal
surface to sit upon. Using all four-treatment prongs together has
the exact same advantages, insuring optimal health and vitality.
Each prong compliments and strengthens the others while at the same
time greatly compounding results.
For example, many patients say they are
simply too tired to exercise. The medications solve this problem
by boosting energy and metabolism, which can then be directed right
into an exercise program. The exercise in turn makes the medications
work much more efficiently, the results of which fire motivation.
This increased confidence and motivation reinforce the desire to
maintain good nutrition. The good nutrition provides natural energy,
which makes exercising that much more enjoyable while the medications
curb cravings for sweets and fried foods making good nutrition easy
to manage. So when used together, these four legs form a powerful
bond, guaranteeing success. Remove a leg and a vital link is lost,
making success more difficult to achieve.
