Your
ultimate goal or outcome, then, is not a specific weight number,
but the all- important feeling you want to have when you reach
it. That’s fulfillment! Anything less will be a disappointment
to you. Anything less will depress your motivation and determination.
Make
it clear in your mind right now that if you’re watching the scale
just to see a magic number, you will fail long-term. Numbers can’t
bring fulfillment. Fulfillment comes from inside. The scale will
always disappoint. I don’t want you to hit your number goal only
to say, “Is this it? I thought I was supposed to be happy!”, and
then live every moment struggling to maintain that number.
You
will lose weight – but it’s not a straight drop. It has peaks
and valleys too, just as your life does. Some months you gain
a
pound, some days you lose three. But because you’re committed,
you know you will – you must – achieve the healthy body and mind
you desire. When you realize this, when you know it in your soul
that
your weight will go down, that it must go down, it brings tremendous
piece of mind. Because regardless of what the scale says, you’re
never going to quit! You’re concentrating on an outcome, not
a number. Bumps in the road are only bumps; they are not reasons
for quitting.
To stop thinking about weight loss through a “weight-based” mentality,
you must purposely change the way you think. To do this, I’ve
coined the term Outcome Based Weight Loss. This is
what I want you to focus on – your outcome each month. Instead of
concentrating on a number, concentrate on the way you feel. Don’t
ask what you’ve
lost in pounds. Ask what you’ve gained in the areas of health,
energy, smaller-sized clothes, self-esteem, and confidence. If
you are feeling
more like you want to feel at your outcome – you know you’re succeeding.
It’s
been said that 80 percent of reaching a goal is why; the other 20
percent is how. Or as another version states: “If you have enough
reasons why, you’ll figure out the way how.” After all, the root
work of motivation it motive, meaning, “What is your reason for
doing this?”
